Overview
Designing a cohesive cloud onboarding experience for VMware’s next platform
VMware set out to launch the MVP of its cloud services platform. I was tasked with designing a cohesive onboarding, user management, and dashboard experience that helped existing users transition into the new platform while maintaining consistency across VMware’s broader service ecosystem.
The Challenge
VMware was moving existing customers into a new cloud services platform built around Virtual Data Centers and cloud service management. The experience needed to feel unified and intuitive while supporting complex enterprise workflows.
The challenge was to help customers adopt the new platform without disruption. Existing users needed a clear way to onboard, manage accounts, access services, and understand how the new platform connected with VMware’s existing products.
What I Did
User Journey Mapping:
Mapped the onboarding journey to identify pain points, user needs, and key moments where customers needed clarity during migration.
Onboarding Experience:
Designed a guided onboarding flow that helped existing users transition into the new cloud platform with clear steps, logical navigation, and reduced friction.
User Management:
Created user management flows that made it easier for admins to manage accounts, permissions, and settings inside the new platform.
Dashboard Design:
Designed a central dashboard that integrated existing services and gave users a clear hub for accessing, managing, and monitoring their cloud services.
Wireframes & Prototypes:
Developed wireframes, mid-fidelity mockups, visual direction, and interactive prototypes to validate the onboarding and management experience with stakeholders.
Design System:
Established consistent UI patterns, dashboard components, navigation treatments, and interaction guidelines to unify VMware’s new cloud platform with existing service experiences.

Key Decisions
Unify the experience.
The platform needed to feel like one cohesive VMware cloud product, not a collection of disconnected services.
Guide users through migration.
The onboarding flow was designed to reduce uncertainty by showing users where they were, what they needed to complete, and how to move forward.
Make management easier.
The dashboard became a central control point where users could access services, manage accounts, and adjust settings without jumping across fragmented experiences.
Maintain consistency across services.
The visual direction and interaction patterns helped bridge the new platform with existing VMware services, reducing disruption for current customers.
Core Product Loop
Onboard — Existing users enter the new cloud platform through a guided setup flow.
Configure — Admins manage accounts, permissions, and user settings.
Access — Users reach cloud services through a unified dashboard.
Manage — Teams monitor services, update settings, and maintain control from one central hub.
Adopt — A consistent experience helps customers build confidence in the new platform.
Results
• Helped launch the MVP of VMware’s cloud services platform.
Created a smoother transition path for existing users moving into the new platform.
Improved user management through clearer account, permission, and settings flows.
Designed a centralized dashboard that made cloud services easier to access and manage.
Strengthened consistency across VMware’s new platform and existing service experiences.
This project reinforced how important product design is during platform transitions. Customers were not just learning a new interface—they were moving into a new way of managing cloud services. The design needed to reduce friction, create trust, and make a complex cloud ecosystem feel organized, familiar, and easier to adopt.
